The Centre for Litigation Trust (CLT) has raised concerns over cases of election-related violence that rocked the current 24 by-elections, putting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC)credibility to the test.
CLT Executive Director Julius Ogogoh said electoral malpractices reported in various polling stations in the by-elections held on 27th November, 2025, have left many Kenyans scared, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mr Ogogoh challenged IEBC to prove to Kenyan electorates through the ongoing by-elections that they will be capable and trusted to manage free and fair, and violence-free elections in the looming 2027 general elections.
"The newly established IEBC, Kenyans have put you to the test, the test to prove your capability of handling the 2027 general elections. If you don't handle these by-elections well, you will have to quit earlier because Kenyans would not want to see another election violence in the country in 2027," Mr Ogogoh warned.
He added that a team of CLT election observers have been posted across all the 24 by-election areas where they reported numerous electoral malpractices, including violence at polling stations, voter bribery, and voter intimidation, among others.
"As human rights defenders, through the Centre for Litigation and Trust, we are watchful and have posted a team of election observers across the cross, including Malava, Magarini Constituencies, and Baringo County, among others. We have very intelligent Observers in the areas and therefore appeal to all parties and their supporters to try to avoid violence. Let's know that the by-election is life and death, we still have a life to live and a country to protect, whether you're an ODM, UDA or any other party supporters, says the CLT Executive Director.
Electoral disputes being one of the CLT agenda, Ogogoh said elections must be free and fair to avoid election-related disputes and violent incidents.
CLT election Observers in Kaspul Kabondo constituency reported widespread violence in the area, with serious incidents recorded at Agoro Sare polling station, where a Member of Parliament was seriously injured by goons who accused him and his ODM supporters of vote rigging attempts.
In Mbeere North Constituency, where violence incidents were also reported despite high security beef up, our Observers recorded a case where former CS and Speaker Muturi engaged publicly in a fist fight with a polling agent over vote rigging claims.
in Magarini Constituency, a local politician clashed with party supporters over his attempt to forcefully gain access to a polling station without an IEBC-approved entrance badge.
Meanwhile, the Centre for Litigation Trust is prepared to handle matters of electoral disputes as well as engage communities on the election cycle and electoral process, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
